Today 1 in 8 babies born in the UK are taken to a neonatal special baby unit for care.  An amazingly high statistic for our future children and yet charities to support sick babies are not very well known.

Bike Session 101

After yesterday’s hectic day at work, I finally got to a stage where I knew I wanted to get a bit more out of the day and setup my trainer in front of the television to get some bike training in.

I got on the bike and the Wii caught my eye as well as a game that I don’t play that often and probably only will when I have nothing better to do.  So I played 20 minutes and then got back to the biking….

After biking for an hour I was covered in sweat, breathing heavily, seeing fuzzy (only because my glasses weren’t on anymore) and feeling generally like the world was about to come to an end.  Well.  Maybe not that bad.

I just felt like I was really unfit and in need of some rest.

When I collapsed into bed 30 minutes later I must’ve passed out so quick that I didn’t even realise it because I didn’t toss and I didn’t turn and for once I slept relatively peacefully with minimal disruption.

Except when PL knocked the tea cup off the bedside table and scared me half to death.

Not doing so Well

Very occassionally I just wish I could disappear for a few weeks and just get away from everything and everyone.  Lately I'm in that mood and no matter how much I try to just get myself out of this funk, it just does not want to happen. Its not particularly work-related or life-related, its just me trying to find a little space where I can crawl into to be with just myself for a few moments.

A few weeks ago I hurt an intercostal muscle.  That didn't get me down too much.  Then a week and a bit ago I came down with some flu-like symptoms, but not really flu.  On Wednesday morning last week I got muscle cramps right over my heart which went down my left arm and up into my neck.  The doctors failed to diagnose me with anything, which left me with a sense of WHAT IS GOING ON?!!? I was told it isn't my heart and it isn't my lungs and with that told to go home.  They didn't actually tell me why I was getting these cramps, but it happened a day or two later again and this time I didn't even bother phoning a doctor.

So that got me into a funka nd now I can't get out of it.

Sometimes I guess we all just need a little bit of a break.

I don’t look South African anymore

Ride my Bike

This morning I woke up and I would’ve loved to get up and go for a good old bike ride.  The problem is that for the past few days I’ve been feeling ill and even this morning I woke up, still carrying the fever that has been bothering me.  Add to that the headache and you might think that I have something more than just the common cold.

Out of commission and frustrated beyond words, I’ve started looking through old pictures of myself and come to the conclusion that I need to get out a lot more.  Gone is my South African tan that I arrived with – instead I am now quite white.  Apart from some really burnt shoulders that I managed to get on one single bike ride a few weeks ago.  Gone is the sun bleached hair.  Now it has this horrible stripe in it that a hairdresser made when she had a really bad day.  I’ve not had the courage to go back in fear of what might happen next time.

So here’s to more outdoor training … once I manage to lose the fever and headache and all things that make illness what it is.

Sweating it Out

Sweating it Out

The past week has been fun - the 100 push-up Julyathon is keeping me busy, but the best workout I had must've been on Saturday when I headed out to Grimsby on my bike. The ride from Nottingham to Grimsby is relatively "flat", except for a few hills that give you absolute hell.

I ended up very red, hot, without liquids and generally tired after 4 hours. I refilled my bottles (I was carrying 2.5l!) twice along the way and after 4 hours my right knee was giving me a lot of grief.

So of course I need to try it again this weekend.

Tonight I have swimming - should be a lot of fun :)

Heated July

Heatwave

With the temperatures soaring and a lack of enough fluids (I carry a bottle of water with me at all times nowadays and it keeps emptying so quick that I think I might need a bigger bottle!), training might not be the highest priority on my mind.  Combine that with injured intercostals, and I’m just about permanently uncomfortable.

Yesterday I started the 100 Pushups Julyathon – the first day didn’t end too badly.  I managed 6 push-ups in the final set – more than I’ve been able to do in literally ages!  Afterwards I felt a tad motivated, so I started the 200 sit-ups challenge as well and ended up feeling like I might just die.  I forgot that the ribs don’t like the exercise so much at the moment.

We’ll see how the 100 push-ups progress though.
